Oktoberfest originated in 1810 as a royal wedding celebration for Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. The festivities, which included a horse race and various festivities, took place over several days and were so popular that they became an annual tradition. The festival was officially named Oktoberfest and gradually evolved into a large public event featuring beer tents, traditional Bavarian food, music, and amusement rides.
